Fertility treatment costs
People are bad
informed concerning the cost of infertility treatments. For example they think
that insurance doesn’t cover for infertility treatments, that the fertility
specialists are expensive. The mass media tends to focus only on treatments
like: in vitro fertilization, preimplantation genetic diagnosis,
intracytoplasmic sperm injection, but there are other infertility treatments
that are affordable and very effective. 30% of patients with infertility
problems resort to In Vitro Fertilization
treatment. Of course the most expensive treatment is the one that doesn’t work.
It is very important that a complete evaluation to be performed on both
partners so that the specialist could prescribe the adequate treatment. If the
woman receives an infertility treatment and the cause of infertility is due to
the male partner and it hasn’t been identified then the conception won’t occur.
Many times, after having a laparoscopic procedure, women consult a reproductive
endocrinologist. Is better that the laparoscopy should be done by a
reproductive specialist because this way the necessity to repeat the procedure
is eliminated and the cost is reduced. Usually, insurance covers laparoscopy
and other diagnostic tests. Infertility clinics have consultants that can help
the patients decide what kind of infertility treatments they afford. If an
expensive treatment like IVF is needed many clinics offer a financial support
program.
The infertility
treatment’s cost is lower if patients consult a fertility specialist at the
very beginning of the infertility evaluation.
Many insurance policies cover the diagnostic
tests. This test may include blood tests, office visits, ultrasounds, X-rays
and sometimes even laparoscopy. Unfortunately there are policies that exclude
infertility diagnostic tests. If the policy covers fertility treatments then is
most likely it would also cover for fertility medications. Sometimes a specific
pharmacy is specified in the policy.
There is a policy
limit annual or lifetime so a specialist should be consulted at the beginning
of the treatment. Most of the patients can’t afford many attempts for treatment
that don’t work so the gold is to receive a cost-effective treatment.
