Fertility tests for women

When a simply test like blood analysis doesn’t show a potential infertility cause other test are performed. Usually these test consist in an examination of the ovaries, uterus and the fallopian tubes. Bellow you can find useful information about the most known fertility test for women:

1) Post-Coital test is done in order to verify a woman’s cervical mucus after the sexual act to see if sperm are alive and if they can move normally through the mucus. The test is done the day of ovulation or the day before that.

2) Pelvic ultrasound shows the structure and the size of the ovaries and of the uterus. This test can also monitor the size and the condition of the ovaries during the infertility treatment.

3) Endometrial biopsy. A small part of the uterus lining is taken to check if there are normal changes of the lining during the menstrual cycle.

4) Hysterosalpingogram is a test performed with X-rays to look inside the fallopian tubes and the uterus. The picture obtained with this test can reveal a blockage of the fallopian tubes. This blockage could prevent  sperm from fertilizing the egg because they can’t move into a fallopian tube or it can prevent the egg from getting to the uterus. The uterus might not be able to receive an egg preventing it from attaching to it.

5) Laparoscopy is a medical procedure that uses a thin scope inserted in the belly through a small incision in order to see the woman’s pelvic organs: ovaries, fallopian tubes and uterus. With the help of this procedure infections, cysts, fibroids can be found, all of these being infertility risk factors. Laparoscopy can be used to treat endometriosis.

6) Hysteroscopy is a medical procedure used to check the uterine lining. A thin scope is inserted through the vagina and cervix in the uterus. During this procedure the doctor can also perform a biopsy or open a fallopian tube that was blocked.
