Female infertility treatment

Ovulation induction. This treatment is recommended for women with an irregular menstrual cycles. In order to induce ovulation the female patient receives infertility drugs like: gonadotropins  and clomiphene citrate.

Artificial insemination is a treatment that consists in injecting the sperm into the woman’s reproductive tract so that fertilization could be easier.

ART-Assisted Reproductive Technology includes treatments like:IVF,GIFT,ZIFT,ICSI.

All of these treatments are based on the removal and reimplantation of the egg from the female patient.

IVF-In vitro fertilization : the egg is harvested and fertilized outside the woman’s body and afterwards the embryo is transferred to the uterus.

GIFT-Gamete Intrafallopian Transfer: the egg’s harvesting and fertilization doesn’t take place in the lab,the fertilization takes place in the fallopian tubes where the sperm and the ova are placed. The odds of success of GIFT procedure are 30%.

ZIFT-Zygote Intrafallopian Transfer:the egg is fertilized in the laboratory, resulting a zygote which doesn’t transform into an embryo, because before that is placed in the fallopian tubes. The odds of success of  ZIFT procedure are 30%.

ICSI-Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection:the mature egg is injected directly with a single sperm and after that the embryo is transferred to the uterus. The odds of success of this treatment are 15-20%.

There are also some natural infertility treatments like fertility herbs and acupuncture. Many women appeal to these methods when they are trying to get pregnant.

In addition to these treatments the female infertility treatments include also surgery in order to eliminate causes of infertility like endometriosis, uterine fibroids scarring produced by peritonitis or tubal obstruction. Endometriosis is a very serious disease that produces tissues wich can attach to the woman’s uterus, the ovaries and the fallopian tubes. As a solution for endometriosis specialists recommend hormonal medications such as Gn-RH agonsts that controls estrogen production.

Another treatment for endometriosis is laparotomy microsurgery is invasive but very effective for women with infertility problems. Using a microscope to perform the surgery the scar tissue are removed and the fallopian tubes are reconstructed.

Laparoscopy is a procedure that involves the use of a laparoscope which is introduced through a small incision so that the doctor could see the pelvic organs and remove scar tissue. The procedure is very effective for endometriosis treatment.

Falloposcopy is a procedure used to examine the fallopian tubes in order to see if there is a tube obstruction, scarring or damage at the inner lining.

These surgery procedures may have complications as any other surgery:infection, bleeding, side effects of the anesthesia. Other specific complications:the uterus can be damaged during falloposcopy, the urinary tract or the intestine can be affected after a laparoscopy or after a tubal surgery a tubal pregnancy can appear.
