Female Infertility Causes
Female factor
infertility represents the inability to conceive or carry a pregnancy
to term. The main cause of women infertility is ovulation problems. The
symptoms of this problem are irregular or non-existent menstrual cycles. Other
causes of female fertility problems are polycystic ovarian syndrome, hostile
cervical mucus, uterine and pelvic abnormalities and secondary infertility.
The polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is
very spread among women of childbearing age. The woman’s ovaries are covered
with small sacs,fluid-filled called cysts. These cysts that cover the ovaries
cause the absence or the irregularity of ovulation .
The treatment of PCOS
depends on the patient’s request. If the
patient wants to treat PCOS as a female factor infertility then fertility drugs
and hormones are recommended to stimulate ovulation. The symptoms of PCOS , like irregular ovulation or menstruation, can
be treated with birth control pills and diabetes medications. Surgery is an
option, but is only recommended after all other treatments have been
tried, because scar tissue can develop and the pelvic area can be damaged.
Hostile cervical mucus is another cause
of female infertility. Just before
ovulation
a water mucus is produced by the cervix. This mucus helps
sperm to reach into the fallopian tubes and fetilize the egg,so if it is too
thick or viscous then it can’t fulfill it’s function. Hostile cervical mucus
can also be a cause of secondary infertility.
Abnormal uterus. The uterus must be able
to receive the embryon and nurture the fetus during the pregnancy. He can be
seriously affected by poor endometrial lining, uterine fibroids ,endometriosis
or birth defects. A woman suffering from secondary infertility and infertility
caused by a miscarriage who develop an abnormal uterus can still get pregnant
with the help of a specialist in female fertility.
Pelvic area abnormalities refer to anatomical problems with the
cervix or vagina, endometriosis, a fallopian tubes disease, damage to the pelvic
cavity. Among the causes of this
condition are endometriosis, infection in the pelvis, secondary infertility or
trauma to the pelvic area. Unfortunately pelvic abnormalities don’t show any
symptom, they are discovered when the woman realises that she has fertility
problems.
In addition to
this,a pelvic area abnormality can occur also after a sterilization
procedure. So if the woman decides that she wants to have children after a
sterilization she might experience some problems.
Irregular ovulation represents the sporadic or absent release of un
unfertilized egg by the ovaries. The main cause of irregular ovulation is
hormonal changes. Other causes can be polycystic ovarian syndrome, tumors, excessive
production of prolactin, premature menopause, infections, chemotherapy. Almost
40% of infertile women have an ovulation problem.
Secondary infertility appears
when a couple have difficulties to become pregnant after already having a
child. The causes of secondary infertility are age, polycystic ovarian
syndrome, hostile cervical mucus, uterine and pelvic abnormalities. A previous
pregnancy can produce scar tissue that may cause a blockage of the fallopian
tubes, so this can lead to infertility. The good news is that secondary
infertility can be treated with artificial insemination, in vitro fertilization and other treatments.
Many times
prescription drugs and contraceptives were consider to be a cause of female
infertility. On one hand this is true, because cancer drugs, for example has
proven to be a cause for infertility. On the other hand intrauterine devices
used for contraception were also consider an infertility cause, but it has been
shown that they don’t cause infertility. Woman can contract a sexual disease
while using an intrauterine device and this can lead to infertility, not the
device itself.
